When the kidneys begin to fail, the body often sends out alarm signals, such as frequent urination at night or sleep disturbances.
The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering the blood, detoxifying the body, and regulating blood pressure, yet many people fail to recognize the early symptoms of kidney failure – especially those that occur at night.
Here are five common nighttime symptoms that may indicate kidney problems.
1. Frequent urination at night
Frequent urination at night can be a symptom of underlying kidney problems.
Frequent urination (more than twice a night) without increased fluid intake in the evening is one of the first signs of failing kidney function. According to a study published in the Journal of Urology, frequent urination at night may be related to an improved ability of the kidneys to concentrate urine. As kidney function declines, the organs lose control over fluid excretion, leading to frequent urination at night. If symptoms persist, patients should have blood tests, such as measuring creatinine levels and glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
2. Swelling in feet or ankles at night
Mild swelling in the feet, ankles, or hands in the evening or after going to bed could be a sign of kidney problems. Kidney failure reduces the ability to excrete sodium and water, leading to fluid retention. According to a study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, peripheral edema is a common symptom in patients with chronic kidney disease.
